World Alzheimer's Day and the MOPEAD Project

September 21, 2019

Saturday 21st September marks World Alzheimer Day 2019, an important international event which aims to raise awareness about dementia. Over the whole month of September, Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) launched a global campaign under the theme of "Let's Talk About Dementia", and the MOPEAD team have been working to support this message by promoting timely diagnosis and the importance of memory health.

ADI will also launch on World Alzheimer Day this year's World Alzheimer Report whihc draws on the results of a survey conducted by ADI and the London School of Economics (LSE) whihc focuses on attitudes towards dementia. This is the largest survey ever undertaken on the subject, with nearly 70,000 responses from 155 countries across the globe.

A key finding of the survey was highlighted by ADI's CEO Paolo Barbarino: "“A key finding in the survey shows that 2 out of 3 people that responded still think that dementia is caused by normal ageing. We must break through the stigma and get people talking openly about dementia to plan well and to access support.”

This highlights the importance of projects like MOPEAD, which aims to shift the paradigm of dementia from late stage diagnosis to early diagnosis. To do this, it is essential people are able to talk about dementia earlier, without fear of stigma.

This is why our campaign during World Alzheimer's Month 2019 was focused on the benefits of timely diagnosis, and the importance of engaging with memory health.

You can find all the materials you need on our website to engage with your memory health, and familiarise yourself with differences between normal ageing and symptoms of dementia.
